Her Best Friend Andrea Marino was killed in the plane crash and, in a story that would carry over to the second season, was being swayed by Romano to stay earthbound. She wasn't actually in the plane. The plane crashed in Grandview and she was on her way to her brother's apt (or something like that) and she got in the way of the plane. That episode was so sad.
